Welcome

Welcome to my website. It's mainly a repository for vacation photos and reminiscences - I have grand ambitions of adding various wacky projects I've had in the works, but that process is slow (glacial). "Why not bung all this up onto your Facebook page?", I hear you cry. I'm not much of a social media person having tried both Facebook and Twitter for a while, ultimately taking the nuclear option on both. Having my own sad little site gives me a space in which to experiment (I work in the online content industry, after all) and affords me explicit control over my web presence (unpolluted by ads expressing baffling political opinions inexplicably "liked" by people of my acquaintance).

Part of our preparations for Dwight's memorial service was to put together two slideshows to play during the reception... more

Movie Calendar 2018

I can't remember which movie started our "calendar movie" tradition. It might have been "April Fool's Day". Certainly, I'd already been occasionally pulling a movie down from the shelf when I realized that the date coincided with the subject matter or title of some movie or other... more

James Bond

SO, I've always been a rabid fan of the James Bond movies and, since lockdown, have become even more so. My obsession has taken many forms, from paper models to pop-up cards to poetry(!). A few examples appear below - I hope to add more soon.

Bond Concours d'Elegance

Over the years, I've amassed an embarrassingly large collection of diecast cars, including most of the available Corgi Bond vehicles. Many were given me by... more

Bond Exhibitions

I've had the opportunity to see several exhibits of items from the Bond films - vehicles, props, costumes, etc. - for a description and photos of them, click here

An Epitaph For Stromberg's PA

In accordance with this thread of tributes for the fallen dead, I have a word to say in grief for one whose life was all too brief... more

An Epitaph For Corinne

It is, my friends, with heavy sighs, that we reflect on the demise of one whose lovely form and face so briefly would our vision grace... more

Up Nort' 2024

Back in 2012, we took a trip up to Bayfield and Duluth and did some kayaking and sightseeing. It was a wonderful trip (I have yet to do anything with all the photos I took). In 2024, we retraced our steps... more

Mexico City 2024

Mexico City had been on our list for a while - it wasn't quite a "spin the globe" decision to go there. We considered going to a resort but decided we really wanted more of an in-destination experience... more

Kayaking MKE

For years we'd bandied about the idea of organizing a neighborhood kayak - this Summer it finally happened! Paul sent around a text on a Friday morning... more

UVA 35th Reunion 2019

Perhaps my reunion started with a text from Susan on Saturday, April 6. I was watching the beginning of the NCAA Final Four game - Virginia vs. Auburn and was... more

England 2018

Paul and I had been considering another England trip for years. We love London and wanted to spend more time there after such a wonderful trip with my family back in 2005. Stephanie had been living in Devon for ten years and we'd never visited her in her stomping ground... more

Milwaukee

As with Washington DC, I've taken zillions of photos around Milwaukee but don't always have enough to warrant creating a dedicated page for them. So, here's my Milwaukee sights page... more

Xmas 2017

For Christmas 2017 we decided to converge on West Newbury, Vermont to celebrate both the holiday and our Aunt Louise's 90th birthday... more

Dallas 2017

Earlier this year, our next-door neighbors, the Laues, moved back to Dallas. Their departure was a major bummer and a great loss for our neighborhood. Even before they left, however, there was talk of a possible visit - as the Summer progressed, the talk resolved into... more

Vermontgolfier

One of the thoughts I had after it was over was: "yes, I DO have a bucket list and that was on it!" This last summer, my brother John, my sister Nora, and I went on a hot air balloon ride over the Connecticut River from Thetford, Vermont to Lyme, New Hampshire... more

Vermont 2017

In July of 2017, we converged once again on the town of Fairlee, Vermont. John and Carolyn had rented that same house above Lake Morey. Once again, far too much time has elapsed since the trip for me to write much in the way of detail. The gathering was timed for us to be in West Newbury for Dwight's second memorial service... more

Colorado

When our friends Craig and Jeff suggested a ski weekend in Colorado we assented with embarrassing swiftness. Paul had been hoping to arrange a ski trip to somewhere (other than Southeastern Wisconsin). While we both are very fond of our local hills... more

Vermont 2015

My brother John and his wife Carolyn have now rented the same house in Vermont for the summer for the last couple of years. We spent a week with them at the house in July of 2015. It followed on the heels of my last trip to Vermont with my father earlier that spring... more

St. Martin 2015

We said toodle-oo to Chester, wondering as always how he'd fare in our absence - 19-year-old chronically ill, curmudgeonly feline that he is. As is customary for me, I imagined all of the things I might have left awry back at the house... more

Sights around Washington, D.C.

On a recent springtime visit to DC, we took a stroll through the gardens at the Dumbarton Oaks mansion in Georgetown. I realised as we walked among the lovely flowering trees, sculptures, and pavilions that I'd never done anything with the set of photos I'd taken on a prior springtime visit... more

UVA 30th Reunion 2014

In the Fall of 2013, announcements and information began to arrive in the mail and the email about University of Virginia Reunion Weekend 2014. I graduated from UVa in 1984 so this was my 30th - a biggie. My first impulse was... more

Costa Rica 2014

Sky Meadows Virginia 2014

On the day after Thanksgiving this past year, a motley crew converged on Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia. The park is a bit over an hour's drive from the Marsh Compound in Arlington. Nora, Jim, Steph, and I comprised the Arlington party. After a pleasant drive with a couple of detours... more

Autumn in Vermont 2013

In October of 2013 Dad and I went on the latest of our twice-yearly visits to his brother and sister, Bill and Louise, in West Newbury, Vermont. I've been going to West Newbury since before I can remember - the town, nestled in the hills above the Connecticut Riverl... more

Christmas in Virginia 2012

In keeping with tradition, after service we drove over to the capitol building and had a shufti at the tree on the west lawn. The good citizens of California provided the year's tree and decorations... more

Visit to Muscoda, Wisconsin 2012

The plan for Labor Day was to spend a day in Muscoda, visit with Abby and Jason and the family and kayak a stretch of the Wisconsin River which runs practically to the door of their dairy farm. The drive to Muscoda is beautiful - we took the road which skirts Madison to the north... more

Ragnar Madison - Chicago 2012

It was around 10:30 and we'd just gotten a text from friends asking us to meet them in another part of the festival grounds. There really wasn't enough time to do any more socialising... more

Kayaking with the Fam in Milwaukee 2012

We'd hoped for a long time to successfully organise a kayaking trip with the family on the Milwaukee River in downtown Milwaukee. The plan came together over Memorial Day weekend in spite of inauspicious weather that Saturday morning... more

I love our annual winter trip to the Twin Cities. We're very grateful to John and Mary for allowing us to come along for the ride. It's always great to spend time with Johnny and Kersten and Lizzie and Brian. We really lucked out as far as the weather was concerned... more

Italy Trip 2011

I think I slept for a couple of hours on the plane - that is, a couple of hours' worth of ten-minute periods of nodding-off. Our flight, while ostensibly on Alitalia, was in an Airbus 330 with some sort of generic, charter livery "One Star"? or something like that... more

London 2005

In 2005 we spent a week in London with my lovely family. We rented a 3-level flat at 26 Craven Street in Westminster. Craven Street is right up against the west side of Charing Cross Station between Trafalgar Square and The Embankment... more
